Throughout the film we see two events that make a regular appearance. The Colonel inquring whether there has been any letters about his overdue pension and his obsession with a fighting cock. Slowly we realise that he and his wife have remained frozen in time with the shadow of their dead son hovering in all aspects of their lives. They maintain a stubborn streak even in their times of need. The Colonel will always remember that he played a part during the fight between the Church and government umpteen years ago. Now he is forgotten by the government and has to carry on with his life in the best possible way while maintaining his dignity. The couple are destitutes but their pride had the upper hand most of the time. A few scenes depicted how the couple's love for each other remain strong despite all the hardship.
The story develops slowly and takes time to enfold so the audience has to be patient to follow what is happening until the end.
