Indian widows before independence. In this case the story revolves around the eight year old child widow, Chuyia. The moment her husband died, she was given away to an ashram specifically for widows. Her world changes and she has to adapt to her new status as an undesirable in Indian society. Fortunately she meets a kind hearted Brahmin widow, Shakuntala and the jewel of the ashram, a very pretty young widow, Kalyani. Kalyani is taken away to benefactors at night by the town pimp as a means of support for the ashram. This trade is sanctioned by the head widow, Didi. Things came to a head when Kalyani meets Ibrahim, a young law student. The situation at that time and events that followed ended the story on a melancholy note. There is still a long way for the widows of India to gain their rightful place as an equal member of society.
