The film looks at two sisters and their relationship with each other as well as their own family. Maggie (Cameron Diaz) as the air head sister and Rose (Toni Collette) as the more sensible of the two are the main leads. The story gained momentum after an incident that was the straw that broke the camel's back, in this case Rose's back. The two sisters lead separate lives after that incident with Maggie finding solace and shelter with her previously unknown grandmother Ella (Shirley MacLaine). The story had bitter sweet moments whenever the focus was on Maggie discovering herself that she is much more than a bubbly party girl. Meanwhile, Rose realises that she is capable of continuing with her life after that incident involving Maggie. When they meet again, they realise that they are unable to forego the fact that they are a pair. Best friends, confidant, a helping hand in times of need and despair.
Maggie quoted a poem by ee cummings "i carry your heart with me" which sums up brilliantly the feelings felt between the two of them.
