Lan Yu (Liu Ye) who started sleeping with Handong (Hu Jun) for money eventually fell in love with his benefactor. But Handong has always had other plans - sleeping with other guys, getting married and having children. This is despite his deep feelings which are getting stronger for Lan Yu.
The first separation was over another boy. They met up again during the Tianmen Square demonstration of 1989. The second separation occurs when Handong fell in love with a woman working as an interpreter for his company.
Both of them lead separate lives after Handong's marriage but met up again after a few years.
When Handong fell into bad times, it is Lan Yu who gave his partner a helping hand. At last, Lan Yu can reciprocate whatever Handong has done to help him earlier.
Alas, things do not end on an entirely happy note.
