Disturbing social drama with hit in the face acting by the ensemble. Swear words are peppered throughout most scenes. Maybe a reflection of the real language spoken by that part of Australian society. They're not the normal nicely brought up goody two shoes family. They have more than their fair share of ups and downs. More downs in this case.
The boy in the family, Shaun shoulders all this emotional baggage in the only way he knows. Befriending like minded youths with almost the same family background. He tries to cope with his absent father. Shaun even tries to reconnect with his father when the latter is released from prison but the father does not want the son in his life. The father's action might have been a disguise to save the son from venturing and continuing in the same mould. Noble gestures if done unconsciously.
The mother's love for the son is typical motherly love. She herself need straightening and the son is her life's anchor. She and the family will survive the boy's temporary absence from home. The social welfare has its heart in the right place and the boy might be able to change the course of his destiny.
